Hurricane Katrina OR Thug of the Week 3-20-2008

You would think the local judges would take these "citizens", at least our "Thug" group, and give them some quality time at the Extended Stay facilities in Shelby County. You would think that, but then again, you would be wrong. Maybe I'm just a cynic, but after a person has been arrested 10 times or more, I think they should probably become property of the state. But, then again, that's just my liberalism oozing out!

This week's thug happens to be a business woman. She is diversified in the manufacturing, sales and entertainment industries. I know this because I see that several times in the 155 different arrest locations, she was charged with either MANUFACTURING, Delivering, or Selling drugs. She has also been a frequent companion to many, or so it seems. But, she just doesn't seem to understand that she shouldn't obstruct the roadway, nor rob and assault people.

An item of note is that she has been prostituting in the area of Summer and Lester for the past 20 years. That location should sound familiar, since that is near the location of one of the biggest crimes ever committed in Memphis. Here are the gory details:

Katrina was arrested for prostitution near a church or school twice last year. This is a class B misdemeanor which carries a $1000.00 fine and up to 6 months in jail. Well, if we had truth in sentencing, she would still be in jail, but since they do about 1/3rd of the sentence, she wasn't in jail long. Tell me we don't need a sentencing matrix!

Katrina (an appropriate name) has also been arrested for Grand Larceny, Petit Larceny, Robbery, Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance, and many, many, many times for soliciting rides, etc. As a matter of fact here is a breakdown of the 155 different charges she has had in General Sessions Court:

He now has been booked 168 times in the county jail - usually for being drunk and disorderly. Here's to you Willie and the judges, legislators and prosecutors too!

Love your thug of the week deal.

You know as well as I do though that things aren't going to improve in Memphis until our "leaders" can admit what the problem is and they're still a long, long, way from being able or willing to do it.

The problem isn't guns, it's blacks with guns and their behavior in general.

There are exceptions to every rule but in general give a black man a gun and suddenly the answer to every problem that confronts him is gunfire. Doesn't matter if it's New Year's Eve, 4th of July, or whatever the answer is always gunfire.

Then there's the fact that almost every major city in the US with a majority black population has a serious crime problem. Detroit, Chicago, St. Louis, Memphis and hundreds of little towns all over where the population is majority black has a crime problem.

This is not racist it's simply fact.

Hopefully Mayor Potatoehead will take Godwin with him and we'll get a police director that will crack down on crime in Memphis now (regardless of whether the perp is black or white).

Sorry, I can't agree the problem is blacks with guns. Not all blacks are criminals, just as not all whites are racists.

It wasn't a black officer who had my back all those times I did building entries at the SCSO, it was another officer. I didn't care what his or her color was. As a matter of fact, there was a crew on the 4-12 shift of the SCSO Fugitive squad that I think the world of. We had each others back too many times, and we appreciated each other. I considered them brothers and 1 sister.

It's not race, it's class that separates us.

Class may be the underlying factor but in Memphis, it's statistically race and the first poster is right. The sooner the black polticians admit that, the quicker we can get on with doing something about it. No one said all blacks are criminals....but there are certainly a higher number of them in Memphis than you would expect given the percentage of the population.

The first comment was, "The problem isn't guns, it's blacks with guns and their behavior in general"

That means he or she believes any black with a gun is the problem. I don't agree. Sure blacks are over-represented in the crime statistics, but I would be more surprised if you were able to look at the incidence of crime in black families where there are two parents in the house. I'll bet they are close to white, hispanic, asian or any other group in terms of crime. The issue, as I see it, is about teenage mothers, no fathers, and kids being left to fend for and to train themselves. I remember hearing Adrian Rogers say once that a child is basically brought into the world as a savage. It's the parents responsibility to train them to be otherwise. He was a very wise man.

That was my anonymous post, I hit the wrong button...anyway, you are correct. But the leaders of this community are STILL going to have to admit the facts, be it the crime rate or the single parent families. I am encouraged that more black leaders, usually the pastors, seem to be doing just that.

85% of all crimes are a result of use or sell of drugs. Provide some REAL help in that area or the revolving door will continue. When a person goes to jail for whatever for whatever lenght of time, Shelby County does NOT offer any kind of social reform. You do your time then you atre released back to "the streets", knowing nothing of how to move back into society. Why do women prostitute? to support a drug habit...it is certainly not to get exercise. from a recovering addict who used to be a "thug"(haha)-stuck in Shelby County's revolving door program

I think we have some programs now, but the desired effect doesn't happen. I think that is because there is no such thing as rehabilitation - until the rehabee decides it's time to change their "wicked ways."

Therefore, I advocate a system that looks to modify behavior. Give people education, but people have already had every opportunity from elementary school on, and they still wind up being thugs.

By modifying behavior, the person gets an understanding, more quickly and either ceases the behavior, or moves elsewhere.

The government (taxpayers) can and has done a lot already, and the taxpayers who aren't a drain on society, are tired of it.
